Delaware lawns face unique challenges like sandy soil and bagworms.
Overview
Growing a healthy lawn in Delaware requires a different approach than in other parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Providing effective lawn care services in Delaware means understanding the unique challenges of the Coastal Plain—from sandy, fast-draining soil to the intense humidity that rolls in from the bay.
At HillSide Lawn Service, we know that what works in the rocky hills of Pennsylvania won’t work in the sandy loam of Middletown or Dover.
Since 1994, we have provided trusted lawn care services in Delaware, helping homeowners achieve healthier, more resilient turf through sustainable, science-based methods. We don’t just spray fertilizer; we engineer a soil environment where your grass can truly thrive.
The Challenge
While our neighbors to the north fight clay, Delaware homeowners often fight sand. Sandy soil drains water too quickly, taking valuable nutrients with it before your grass can absorb them. This leads to leaching, leaving your turf hungry and thirsty even after you water it.
We start by testing your pH. Sandy soils often become acidic quickly, locking up nutrients. We use this data to apply the exact amount of Lime or Sulfur needed.
For Delaware lawns, we highly recommend our Premier Program or a-la-carte soil amendments. We use advanced biochar (CarbonizPN) to add structure to sandy soil, acting like a sponge to hold water and nutrients at the root zone.
Even in sandy soil, compaction and thatch buildup can suffocate your lawn. By late summer, Delaware lawns often look tired from weeks of intense heat and summer storms.
We recommend Core Aeration & Overseeding every fall to hit the reset button.
Delaware landscapes are famous for their privacy screens of Leyland Cypress and Arborvitae. Unfortunately, these are the favorite food of Bagworms. These “silent destroyers” can strip an evergreen bare in a single season. Our Tree & Shrub Care (included in Deluxe and Premier programs) provides timed applications to stop bagworms before they destroy your investment.
The Japanese Beetle is prevalent in Delaware, and their larvae (white grubs) love to feast on the roots of local lawns. We include preventative Grub Control in our Essential, Deluxe, and Premier programs to stop them before they cause spongy, dying turf.
We offer four distinct programs tailored to your budget and your lawn’s specific agronomic needs:
We are not a national franchise with a generic playbook. We are a locally owned, independent company that knows the difference between a fungal outbreak and drought stress.
Licensed & Certified
We hold current MDA Pesticide & Fertilizer Licenses.
Environmental Stewardship
We use commercial-grade equipment to apply seed and fertilizer at the right rate to prevent waste, protecting our local waterways.
