Soil Testing

Your lawn’s health starts below the surface.

The Science Behind a Healthy Lawn

Your lawn’s health starts below the surface. While many companies simply apply fertilizer and hope for the best, HillSide Lawn Service believes in diagnosis before prescription through professional soil testing.

We don’t guess; we test.

A professional Soil Test is the critical first step in our “Healthy Lawn Process.” Using a professional-grade soil pH tester, our agronomists establish a baseline reading of your soil’s chemistry so treatments can be tailored to your landscape’s specific needs.

Why Soil pH Matters

Soil pH is a measure of your soil’s acidity or alkalinity (basicity). For turf grass to thrive, the soil environment ideally needs to sit in a “sweet spot” between 6.0 and 7.0.

Think of pH as the “gatekeeper” of nutrients. If your soil is too acidic or too basic, the gate is locked, meaning your grass cannot access the fertilizer we apply, no matter how much we put down. Correcting the pH ensures that every treatment we apply is utilized efficiently by your grass, leading to better color, stronger roots, and less waste.

The Mid-Atlantic Soil Challenge

In our region (Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania), geography plays a major role in lawn health. Our native soils are naturally acidic. Without pH testing and intervention, this natural acidity can lock up nutrients and weaken your turf, making it susceptible to weeds and disease. Conversely, some local lawns may be too basic (alkaline) due to construction fill or limestone bedrock.

Because soil chemistry varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, a professional test is the only way to know exactly what your lawn is up against.

The HillSide Difference: A Unique Standard of Care

Unlike many competitors who offer generic, “one-size-fits-all” spraying, HillSide makes soil testing a standard inclusion in our Essential, Deluxe, and Premier programs.

We believe this data is so vital to your success that we don’t treat it as an optional luxury; we treat it as a diagnostic necessity for your lawn.

How Our Process Works:

1

The Test

We take a professional soil sample from your property to determine its current pH level.

2

The Diagnosis

Our team analyzes the results to see if your soil is acidic (requiring Lime) or basic (requiring Sulfur).

3

The Prescription

Based on this data, we recommend specific Nutrient Enhancements or corrective applications (like limestone or sulfur) to balance the soil.

4

The Follow-Up

We retest every 3 years to monitor changes and guide future adjustments, ensuring your soil stays in the optimal range for growth.

While testing is a great way to prepare your lawn for a healthier spring, it can be performed at any time of year to get your program on the right track.
