Overview

Protection from "Silent Destroyers"

Your lawn might look healthy today, but just below the surface, insects could be quietly sabotaging your turf. That’s why HillSide’s proactive lawn grub control and insect control for lawns are essential—before visible damage appears.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, lawn-damaging insects are a leading cause of unexpected turf decline. These pests feed on roots and soil, often causing significant damage before homeowners realize there’s a problem. By the time brown patches or thinning grass appear, the infestation may already be widespread.

Early Detection

At HillSide Lawn Service, we provide professional insect treatment and science-based grub control for lawns to detect early warning signs and stop these invaders before they compromise your turf.

The Main Threat

White Grubs

White grubs are the single most destructive turf pest in our area. These are the larvae of beetles (like Japanese Beetles and June Bugs) that live just under the surface and feed on grassroots.

By eating the roots, grubs cut off your lawn’s ability to absorb water and nutrients, causing the grass to detach from the soil.

Spongy Turf

The grass feels soft or lifts up easily like a carpet.

Animal Digging

Increased activity from moles, skunks, or raccoons (they are digging to eat the grubs).

Beetle Activity

If you see adult Japanese Beetles eating your shrubs in June or July, there will likely be grubs underground soon after.

The HillSide Solution

Science-Based Timing

DIY solutions often fail because many turf insects are resistant to store-bought products, or because treatments are applied at the wrong stage of the insect’s life cycle.

We don’t guess. We distinguish between damage caused by drought, fungus, and insects, ensuring we apply the right solution. Our professional insect treatment approach uses seasonally timed applications designed to target pests when they are most vulnerable, helping prevent long-term lawn damage.

Beyond Grubs

Other Surface & Soil Pests

While grubs attack from below, other pests attack from above. Our insect control measures also address:

sod webworm

Chinch Bugs

Active during hot, dry Mid-Atlantic summers, these small invaders suck moisture out of grass blades and inject toxins that block water flow.

Look for: Small brown patches that expand quickly or moths flying low over the lawn at dusk.

Sod Webworms

The larvae of small moths, these pests chew on grass blades at night and hide in tunnels during the day.

Look for: Small brown patches that expand quickly or moths flying low over the lawn at dusk.

Mole Crickets

Though less common, these pests tunnel underground, disrupting the soil and damaging roots.

Look for: Raised, loose turf or visible tunneling.
