Service Programs & Scheduling

Do lawn care services automatically continue year to year?

Yes. HillSide Lawn Service programs automatically renew each year unless you contact us to make a change. You do not need to re-enroll each season. Before the new year begins, we send a prepay letter outlining your upcoming service and pricing so you can review everything in advance.

If your needs change, you can adjust your program then. We make it simple to update services, add options, or pause treatment if needed. Our goal is to keep your lawn care consistent while giving you flexibility and clear communication.

Yes. Lawn care programs are flexible, and changes can be made at any point during the season. If you would like to add services, remove options, or upgrade your plan, we can review those adjustments with you and update your program accordingly.

Lawn conditions and priorities can shift throughout the year. If you decide to modify your services, we will review pricing in advance and clearly explain any updates before they take effect.

You can pause or cancel your lawn service at any time by contacting our office by phone or email. We do not require long-term contracts, and we will confirm your request quickly so you know your service status right away.

If your needs have changed, we can also review adjustment options before canceling. Our goal is to provide dependable lawn care with clear communication and responsive support.

No. You do not need to be home for most lawn applications as long as our technicians have safe access to the treatment areas. This includes unlocking gates and securing pets indoors so the service can be completed properly.

After each visit, you will receive a service summary by email outlining what was applied and any notes specific to your lawn. This allows you to stay informed about your treatment without being present for the appointment.

You will receive an email notification before your scheduled lawn service so you know when our technicians plan to visit. This advance notice gives you time to prepare your property if needed.

Once service is completed, you will receive a summary outlining what was applied and any recommendations for your lawn. Our communication process keeps you informed about upcoming visits and completed treatments without requiring you to call or check in.

If weather conditions are not safe or effective for treatment, your lawn service will be automatically rescheduled for the next available day. You do not need to contact our office, as our team monitors weather conditions daily and adjusts schedules as needed to protect your lawn and ensure proper application.

Rescheduling allows treatments to be applied under the right conditions for maximum effectiveness. Our goal is to maintain consistent service while prioritizing safety and results.

Preparation is usually minimal before a lawn treatment. To ensure a smooth, effective visit, we recommend that our technicians have clear access to your property and treatment areas.

Before your scheduled service, please:

  • Unlock gates
  • Secure pets indoors
  • Remove toys, hoses, or lawn furniture if possible
  • Mark sprinkler heads or sensitive garden areas

These steps help us complete your service efficiently while protecting your property and ensuring the best possible results.

If we cannot enter your yard due to a locked gate or a fenced area, we may be unable to complete your scheduled service. Clear access is required so products can be applied properly across all treatment areas.

To avoid delays, please unlock gates or provide access instructions before your visit. If entry is unavailable, the appointment may need to be rescheduled to keep your lawn care program on schedule.

Product & Environmental Safety

Are your lawn care products safe for children and pets?

Yes. Our lawn care products are safe for children and pets once the lawn has completely dried. In most cases, drying takes about one to two hours, depending on temperature, sunlight, and humidity.

We recommend keeping children and pets off treated areas until the lawn is dry. Allowing proper drying time ensures safe use of your yard and supports optimal product performance. If you have questions about a specific service, our team is happy to provide guidance.

When applied properly, lawn care products do not leach into groundwater systems, such as wells or septic systems. Applications are made at labeled rates and are designed to remain within the turf and upper soil layer.

Our technicians apply products carefully and responsibly to protect surrounding areas. Proper timing and placement help ensure effectiveness while minimizing environmental impact.

Lawn Treatments, Results & Timing

How long does it take for weeds to die after treatment?

You may begin to see weeds curl or show signs of stress within about 72 hours after application. Full control can take up to two weeks depending on the weed type, weather conditions, and overall lawn health.

Broadleaf weeds typically respond first by curling or discoloring. Over time, they gradually brown and decline. Some tougher or mature weeds may require follow-up applications for complete control. Temperature and growth stage also influence how quickly visible results appear.

It’s normal to see some weeds after the first application. Initial treatments focus on controlling existing weeds while preventing new ones from emerging, and full control often requires multiple visits.

Pre-emergent products prevent new weeds from germinating, but they do not eliminate mature weeds. Post-emergent applications target actively growing weeds, and follow-up services strengthen control over time. Consistent treatments throughout the season provide the best long-term results.

Yes. Once the application has dried, normal rainfall will not wash it away or reduce its effectiveness. Most products bond to the lawn within a few hours under typical conditions.

If rain occurs later the same day, the treatment will continue working as intended. In some cases, light rainfall can even help move granular products into the soil. Our technicians monitor weather conditions to ensure applications are timed for proper performance.

Yes! Once the application has had a chance to dry it will not “wash out” of the lawn. For example, if you are treated at 8am and we have a giant rain storm at 2pm the effectiveness of the application will not diminish.

Brown grass following a lawn application is usually caused by heat stress, drought conditions, or seasonal dormancy rather than the treatment itself. Environmental factors often affect lawn color more than fertilizer or weed control products.

Cool-season grasses such as tall fescue may turn brown during hot, dry periods as a natural survival response. This temporary dormancy helps protect the root system. When cooler temperatures and consistent moisture return, healthy lawns typically regain their color.

Aeration, Seeding & Soil Health

Why does HillSide take soil samples?

Soil testing helps us understand what your lawn actually needs before recommending products or nutrients. By analyzing factors such as pH balance, organic matter, and nutrient levels, we can tailor recommendations to your property rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Healthy grass starts below the surface. Soil conditions directly affect root development, color, density, and long-term performance. Testing allows us to correct imbalances and apply only what is necessary, supporting stronger growth and avoiding unnecessary product use.

In the Mid-Atlantic, fall is generally the best time for aeration and seeding because cooler temperatures and natural moisture create ideal growing conditions. Most lawns establish more successfully in the autumn compared to spring.

During fall, new grass benefits from reduced weed competition and moderate soil temperatures that support root development before winter. Spring seeding can improve thin areas, but it limits the use of pre-emergent weed control and requires seedlings to compete with rising summer heat. If selecting a single season, fall typically yields the most consistent results.

Proper watering is critical after aeration and seeding to support seed germination and early root growth. The goal is to keep the topsoil consistently moist without causing runoff.

  • For the first two to three weeks, water lightly once or twice per day as needed to prevent the seed from drying out.
  • After new grass reaches one to two inches in height, reduce frequency and water more deeply every other day.
  • After four to six weeks, transition to deeper watering two to three times per week to encourage stronger root systems.

Early morning watering is best because it allows the lawn to dry before evening, reducing disease risk.

Turf-type tall fescue is the most commonly recommended grass seed for lawns in Maryland, Delaware, and parts of Pennsylvania because it tolerates heat, drought, and seasonal stress. It performs well in the region’s transition climate and develops a deep root system that supports long-term durability.

In sandy areas, such as properties closer to the beach, tall fescue still performs well but may require more consistent watering during establishment due to faster drainage. In some cases, blended seed mixes may be recommended depending on soil type, sunlight exposure, and existing turf. Choosing high-quality seed suited to your specific property conditions will always produce the best results.

Watering, Mowing & Seasonal Lawn Care

What height should I mow my grass?

For most lawns in our region, the recommended mowing height is about 3.5 inches. Keeping grass at this height encourages deeper root growth and shades the soil, reducing weed pressure and moisture loss.

During hot summer months, raising the mowing height closer to 4 inches can help the lawn retain moisture and stay greener longer. Cutting grass too short stresses the plant and makes it more vulnerable to heat, drought, and disease.

Brown grass during summer is often a sign of drought stress or natural dormancy rather than a problem that requires constant watering. Established cool-season lawns, especially tall fescue, can withstand dry periods and typically recover when cooler temperatures return.

If you choose to water, avoid frequent, light irrigation. Instead, water deeply and only when needed, such as when grass develops a bluish-gray color, or footprints remain visible. Early-morning watering allows moisture to penetrate and reduces disease risk.

Yes. Fall applications are still effective if leaves are present, as long as grass blades are visible through the leaf layer. Granular products will settle into the lawn over time through natural movement such as wind, mowing, or raking.

Fall fertilization is an important part of the seasonal program because it supports root development before winter. Keeping excessive leaf buildup cleared will improve overall lawn health and product performance.

Proper watering is essential after aeration and seeding to support germination and early root development. The goal is to keep the topsoil consistently moist without creating puddles or runoff.

  • For the first two to three weeks, water lightly once or twice per day as needed to prevent the seed from drying out.
  • After new grass reaches one to two inches tall, reduce watering frequency and begin applying water more deeply.
  • After four to six weeks, transition to deeper watering two to three times per week to encourage stronger roots.

Early morning is the best time to water because it reduces evaporation and lowers the risk of disease.

Pest, Lawn & Tree Issues

Should I hang a Japanese beetle trap in my yard?

Hanging a Japanese beetle trap can actually increase their activity in your yard. These traps use pheromones to attract beetles, which may draw more insects to your property before they enter the bag.

Beetles often feed on landscaping before reaching the trap. That’s why it often brings in more pests than it removes. Managing Japanese beetles is more effective when done through targeted treatment rather than attracting additional insects to the area.

Common signs of lawn disease include discolored patches, thinning grass, unusual spots, or areas that continue to spread over time. Grass may also appear wilted despite proper watering.

Lawn diseases are often influenced by excess moisture, compacted soil, poor drainage, or environmental stress. If you notice rapid changes in color or texture that do not improve, an inspection can help determine the cause and recommend corrective action before the issue spreads further.

Mushrooms typically appear after periods of rain or high humidity because they are the visible part of fungi living in the soil. These fungi feed on organic matter such as buried roots, old tree debris, or decaying material beneath the surface.

Mushrooms themselves do not harm your lawn. However, some varieties may be toxic if consumed. Removing them as they appear is the most practical approach. Improving drainage and reducing excess moisture can help limit future growth.

Common signs that trees or shrubs may need attention include yellowing leaves, unusual spotting, excessive leaf drop, visible insects, webbing, or branch dieback. Sudden changes in color or growth patterns often signal stress.

Pest and disease issues can spread quickly if left untreated. Early identification allows problems to be addressed before significant damage occurs. If you notice persistent or worsening symptoms, an inspection can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate care.

Billing, Payments & Discounts

What payment options do you offer?

We accept all major credit cards and ACH bank transfers. Customers can prepay for the full season or enroll in a monthly installment plan, depending on their preference.

  • Prepaying for the entire season typically includes a discount and allows you to secure your program for the year.
  • Monthly billing spreads the cost over time for added flexibility.
  • Automatic payment options are also available for convenience.

Our office can review the best option based on your selected services and budget.

Yes. HillSide periodically offers seasonal promotions, and customers who prepay for the full season typically receive a discount.

Prepay discounts are the most common way to reduce overall program costs. Promotional offers may vary by season or service selected. Contact our office for current details and to determine which payment option provides the best overall value.
