5 Turf and Tree Tips For August Lawn Care

Dog on Hammock resting turf and tree tips

Hopefully, you’re taking advantage of the last month of summer. Perhaps you’re napping in a hammock, down the ocean with family, at the park picnicking or playing another round of flashlight tag with the kids. The last thing you want to think about is the fall, but now is the time to think about the early stages of turf preparations for the upcoming cold days of fall and winter. Here are a few turf and tree tips for August lawn care to consider in between your summertime fun activities.

Schedule Aeration and Seeding

Getting on our schedule for the fall is important to set up in August. Aeration is like giving your lawn a breather. We put holes in your turf to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate deep down to the grass roots. This helps the grass grow and produces a stronger, more vigorous lawn. Seeding is a good way to thicken your grass come spring and prevents weeds from spreading. Get on the books for an aeration and seeding treatment come September.

Know When to Water

We may be envious of our neighbor’s sprinkler system, but our lawns will be green regardless of a timer! Early morning is the best time to water because the sun is not as intense and the water has a chance to soak in. The lawn should not be wet overnight because fungus can grow.

Sharpen Your Mower Blade

We recommend sharpening your mower blade a few times during the mowing season. A dull blade tears grass which can lead to turf diseases. The ragged edge causes moisture loss more readily than a clean cut.

Maintain a Healthy Nutrient Supply

There are necessary elements that are imperative to maintaining a healthy lawn. When you are on vacation in August, fertilizing your lawn is the last thing you want to worry about. Hillside has programs that suit the needs of many lawn types.

Call Hillside for Lime Care

Soil can become acidic and lime corrects the acidity, makes nutrients more available and granulates the soil so it can breathe. August is when we start scheduling lime treatments for September when we take care of cold weather turf preparations.

We want your lawn to be healthy and green. That’s why we share turf and tree tips for lawn care in our blogs and on our website. Visit Hillside Lawn Service for more helpful turf and tree tips so your lawn stays healthy and weed-free all year long.
